Urquhart Joinery Services

Urquhart Joinery Services, which is based in Portsoy near Banff, offers bespoke design and manufacturing services. It employs a workforce of 28 people and specialises in staircases, doors and window sets.

Urquhart’s family business has been operating for more than 42 years and its enviable reputation is testament to the quality of its work. Its fleet of seven Mercedes-Benz vans and single truck carries out deliveries throughout Scotland, from north to south, and from the Shetland Islands to the Central Belt.

When a fire broke out at the firm’s workshop outside Portsoy on Saturday lunchtime, firefighters spent two hours battling to get it under control. They had to cordon off the building and used breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras to identify and pinpoint the source of the blaze.

The company was set up by father and son David and William Urquhart. They said they were unable to disclose details of the blaze as they were too upset at the loss. The blaze blew the roof off the workshop and left it in a ruinous state.

Karrena Kerr

It is thought the fire may have started accidentally when a wood burner was lit on Saturday afternoon and caused the fire to spread rapidly. The blaze ripped through the roof of the building and damaged a lot of equipment, including tools and sledgehammers.

Karrena Kerr, who lived at the property, claims the building works have “butchered” her home. It is now virtually uninhabitable and she has been living in an old caravan in the garden with her two teenage daughters, as she tries to find a way out of the dispute with her builder.

She hopes to secure a court order that will force Derek Urquhart, who owns the Carnoustie-based firm, to pay her for damages. She also wants to put her family’s future back on track, by paying off suppliers and selling the caravan.
